SWIMMING FAQ's (SUP FAQ's Below)
Q: What is the water temperature? Are wet suits allowed?
Ans. : Water temperature should be around 68 degrees.. The beginning is a little colder but it’s warm enough to swim without a wetsuit.
Q: There's a good chance I won't make 11 miles, what happens if I can't finish.
Ans. : There will be an escort close by and you can get pulled at ANY point. Since this is a “FUN” swim there are no rules on stopping, resting, holding onto a boat or even going to shore for a few minutes to recoup. If you can't finish please let a event official or the US Coast Guard Aux know.
Q: Is it OK to swim the event, knowing in advance that I'll get out early?
Ans. : Most definitely. If you want to come and swim part please do so and give it a try. If you are pretty sure you aren't going to make it we recommend that you build a team and do a relay.
Q: What is the boat traffic on this reservoir? Is there a chance we could get run over?
Ans. : The truth, yes, you can die. There is boat traffic and jet ski traffic and a lot of them. Now that I scared you to death, we are going above and beyond to make it as safe as possible. The course that is laid out runs along the shore and NOT in the middle to keep out of the boat traffic. At key spots you will have an escort boat right next to you to prevent any accidents. Boats will have orange flags and radios and every swimmer will be accounted for and watched the ENTIRE time. I just swam out in the lake recently and the boats went out of their way, it seemed like, to slow down and stay away. ADA County marine sheriff and the US coastguard Aux. will also be in proximity. (SAFETY FIRST !!!)
Q: What about sunburn? Even if we lather up before the start, by noon it will be worn off. Since my swim would most likely be around 8 hours, I can foresee a bad burn. Do people put on tight-fitting shirts and shorts?
Ans. : That’s a VERY valid question. The beginning of the event is 6AM to shave hours off of being in the sun. Lather up before hand and hope for the best. I swim with long tight sleeve Under Armour compression shirt.
Q: Do you know of people in Boise who have a boat and would be willing to be my travel escort, for a fee?
Ans. : Yes, We are trying to get volunteers ready but if you want a full time escort for hire I can make sure you have one. Not sure what one costs. I’m having my son ride with me for the day. He has a motorized Kayak (MoKai.com). He has been out on the water and when the wind blows the kayaks better be in good shape to go the 11 miles. We are hoping to have the boaters switch off during the event to keep them fresh and focused. See our sponsors for kayak rentals or SUP rentals.
SUP FAQ's
Q: Why the 9AM start time ?
Ans. : The SUP event will go over twice as fast as the swimmers. The swimmers leave at 6AM, t he Relay team will leave at 6:45AM. This gives them ample time to get out of the way and ahead of the SUP event. We are hoping that both events finish around the same time.
Q: Can we bring food on our board ?
Ans. : YES. Bring what you need. There will be boats checking in on you but for the most part you are paddle boarding solo. Plan to bring with you what you might need for the duration.
Q: Do we finish at the same location as the swimmers ?
Ans. : Yes, all participants will end up at Barclay Bay. there will be a finish line inflatable that you will see on he last turn in the lake about 3 miles out. Head for the inflatable and finish there.
Q: What do I do if a swimmer is in front of me.
Ans. : Swimmers go slower and can't see as well as you can. Please make way to the swimmers. We understand this might mean you have to deviate slightly from a course but we appreciate everyone sharing the water together.
